City Life: Protect Your Skin From Pollution, Sun & Stress
For most of us, living and working in a big city means always being on the go, often feeling run down and stressed, and constantly being exposed to a dirty cocktail of pollutants. You may not be aware of all these daily aggressors, but their effects can quickly manifest on your face.
How is that possible? City air is filled with all sorts of pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, car exhaust, smog, dirt, dust, and other particulates. These pollutants increase the levels of free radicals produced by the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules that attack human cells and damage DNA. They lead to aging, tissue damage, and possible disease.
Current research shows that living in a city can actually age your skin 10% faster, and it’s becoming well known that pollution and free radicals are now some of the main causes of skin damage including dryness, dark spots and speeding up the aging process by slowing collagen production.
So, what can you do to protect your skin?
Besides pollution, UV rays are a big trigger for cell mutation, so start with investing in a high SPF. We recommend Skinceuticals Ultra Facial Defense SPF 50+ which provides long-lasting 12-hour hydration and also protects you from harmful UV rays! Apply it after your usual moisturiser every morning, and if you’re abroad - don’t forget to top up regularly.
Don't forget to take off you makeup (and whatever else may have come in contact with your face during the day - dust, dirt, smog!). An oil cleanser or micellar water will clean your skin of all types of grime without stripping it out moisturiser.
Use antioxidant-rich products with ingredients like vitamin C, vitamin E, argan oil, and green tea. The idea is protect the rest of your cells from free radical damage, while also preventing the formation of new free radicals. We often recommend SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic to clients - it contains 15% Vitamin C which is an antioxidant that can donate electrons in order to neutralise free radicals created in skin after oxidative stress. Oxidative stress = sun damage. So while vitamin C can't protect skin like an SPF can, it can minimise the damage you can't see.
Consider investing in a serum which is a targeted treatment you can apply post-cleanse and pre-moisturizer. Skinceuticals CE Ferulic can act as a serum, but also it's worth checking out Ren Skincare's latest anti-pollution product, "Flash Defence Anti-Pollution Mist" which is great for on-the-go protection!
Regularly deep cleanse your face. At Jasmina Vico Skin, we offer many advanced skincare treatments including LED Light Therapy which uses red light to stimulate and heal the skin. It's perfect for congested skin, troublesome acne, and long-term anti-aging.
As we mentioned above, it’s not just pollution that’s a contributory factor; stress plays a huge role in damaging your skin and has been attributed to an accelerated aging process. Make sure you’re sleeping and exercising regularly, even if it’s just a walk in the park during your lunch break or a quick yoga session before bed. Learn how to meditate, and take a bath at the end of the week to relax all your muscles - including those facial muscles which have probably been overworked!
